Stanton YardsDetroitUSA

Stanton Yards is an arts campus on the Detroit River that transforms four industrial buildings into a cultural hub alongside a working marina. The project extends a growing network of creative destinations in the city, joining nearby adaptive reuse projects in a church, bakery, and warehouse to form a constellation of cultural anchors.

The masterplan organizes a porous network of spaces for art-making, workshops, performance, exhibition, and gathering. A sloped mesh canopy over a new public plaza establishes the campus on Jefferson Avenue, while openings in the existing buildings invite visitors into a shared courtyard at the heart of the site. This courtyard, connected to all four buildings and the waterfront, becomes an active commons for events, installations, and leisure. A canopied walkway and selective demolition expand the outdoor realm, weaving the campus into the surrounding city.

The design preserves the site’s industrial character while clarifying its renewed identity. Existing masonry, corrugated metal, and concrete are reconditioned and layered with polycarbonate, brick screens, and metal grating to produce a familiar yet renewed palette. Abundant daylight, new skylights, and extensive landscaping enhance openness and connection to nature. The result is a regenerated environment where history and future intersect, supporting community life, creativity, and collective imagination.
