ArtparkLewistonUSA

Artpark is a historic cultural entity with a deep artistic legacy. In the decades since its opening in 1974, non-cohesive programming has weakened the relevance of this well-known symbol of the avant-garde. How to revitalize this distinctive site with a broad appeal? How to bring tourists, regional event audiences, and neighbors together to inspire a new relationship with power, nature and culture, refracted through the lens of art?

Our design utilizes the power of the site to transform its main venue into an amphitheater landscape—equally dramatic as an environment to walk dogs as to see world-class touring shows. Connected to the site and the town, it welcomes all visitors to encounter, experience, and create art in a sublime natural setting. The expanded appeal transforms the park from being considered a summer events location into a year-round destination.

The existing amphitheater is expanded in scope to include the surrounding natural greenspace. The ground is shaped to differentiate audience seating and circulation. Operations are efficient and successful, yet fully experience the environment, sky, and view of the Niagara Gorge.

The roof structure, the most visible and central feature of the site, resonates with Artpark in both form and values. A cable truss able to span the length of the stage is maintained in place by a rigid ring hoisted on columns. Draped over the steel, a pneumatic membrane coated with a photo-voltaic film supports itself. The membrane can be switched out between seasons, letting the stage disappear into the land when not in use.

The Serpentine Pathway builds on the existing red brick road identity but upgrades to materials suitable for bike paths, pedestrians, and crowd management. Slightly elevated above the landscape, it functions as a red carpet ride through a sequence of experiences and views: at the Waterfront Edge, through the amphitheater, into Emerald Grove, across a suspension bridge, to the Spoils Field Greenway.

A welcome pavilion at the entry to the Serpentine Pathway celebrates the entry experience while drawing visitors into the park. This pavilion, providing illumination and simple signage, anchors the entry to the park and its connection with Lewiston.
